I was looking forward to reporting tomorrow that Wargame: Red Dragon, the third and final entry in Eugen’s Wargame series of real-time tactical modern war games was going to be available to grab for free, via the Epic Games Store.
For those of you who don’t know, since nearly the beginning Epic have been giving away free games every week via their own digital storefront, the Epic Games Store. Provided you grab it within the window it’s being offered, it’s yours to keep for free forever - the only caveat is that you have to play it via the EGS launcher.
Along with their store exclusives, it has formed part of Epic’s ‘Go Big or Go Home’ strategy of trying to win customers in its bid to challenge Steam for dominance over PC gaming. There have been some pretty decent titles given away before, such as Civilization VI, but Red Dragon would have been the first ‘wargame’ to be offered.
Except now it’s not being offered, at least not this week like we initially thought. Late last night the company put out an announcement that the Red Dragon promotion was being “temporarily delayed”, with this week’s free giveaway switching to Dungeons 3 instead.

It’s a shame really, as while not perfect the Wargame series in general is one of the high-points in wargames that cover modern warfare, and it would have been nice to see it put in the hands of potentially more people who may not have tried it before.
From a personal standpoint, I think Red Dragon is the one I played the least, though not for any concrete reason that I can recall. It had a better dynamic campaign set-up I thought, though generally the inclusion of Jets in AirLandBattle kind of annoyed me, and I wasn’t sure what to make of boats either, which were new to Red Dragon itself.
Eugen has since moved on to make Steel Division: Normandy ‘44 and Steel Division 2, though I hope they (or someone) returns to the modern war setting. MicroProse’s Regiments might be one to watch out for there.
